Rhinoplasty Benefits and Risks

If you have every considered getting a nose job, you should know that there are plenty of benefits and risks associated with the surgery. You’re likely aware of some of these benefits and risks already, but during a consultation with Bergen County plastic surgeon Dr. Tzvi Small, he’ll be sure to go over both in depth. It’s important that you know both the pros and cons of the surgery so that you have realistic expectations of what the surgery can achieve and what it can do for you.

Right now, we’d like to look at some of the pros and cons of Paramus rhinoplasty (nose job). While we can’t possibly detail all of them in this space, we think this general delineation will help you have realistic expectations about the surgery and what it can do for you.

Let’s start with the risks. The most common risks associated with rhinoplasty are the same you can expect from other kinds of surgery. These common risks include allergic reactions to anesthetic, poor healing time, discomfort, and infection. Risks unique to rhinoplasty include nosebleeds, poor shaping of the nose, issues with the nasal passages, and possible respiratory problems. By following our instructions for pre-operative and post-operative care, you can significantly mitigate these risks.

The benefits of rhinoplasty are numerous. Aesthetically, you can greatly alter your appearance for the better even with just a subtle change to the nose. If you have bumps or ridges on the bridge of the nose that are problematic, these can be taken away quite easily through surgery. If you have been injured and your nose is deformed or broken, a rhinoplasty can reshape and restore your nose. Rhinoplasty also has some medical applications, meaning that it can effectively address some cases of sleep apnea and certain breathing problems associated with the nasal passages.

There’s a lot more to talk about when it comes to rhinoplasty, so it’s important that you visit us for a full consultation. To learn more about your many options for facial rejuvenation and aesthetic enhancement, contact Bergen County plastic surgeon Dr. Tzvi Small today.

Eyelid Surgery and Insurance Coverage

One of the best ways to enhance your overall appearance is making adjustments to the eye area. The eyes are truly the windows of the soul, and just a few slight alterations can make a big difference. This goes for the area under the eyes that may appear hollow or baggy, the area around the eyes where lines and wrinkles may etch themselves deeply into the skin, and the upper eyelids that may droop or sag with age. When you come to our Bergen County plastic surgery office, Dr. Tzvi Small will assess your needs for eyelid surgery and determine which option is best for you and your needs.

When it comes to eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), there are many reasons that people would decide to undergo it. Some of these reasons may actually be covered by your medical insurance. This won’t hold true for all situations, of course, but we’d like to look at the various reasons that people may undergo eyelid surgery and whether or not insurance will cover part of the cost.

One reason that people undergo Bergen County eyelid surgery is for aesthetic or cosmetic reasons. If the upper eyelids droop or sag and do not look appealing, eyelid surgery is a great option to consider. However, when performed for purely elective purposes, your insurance will not cover the eyelid surgery.

Another reason that people may undergo eyelid surgery is for reconstructive surgery reasons. If you are in an accident of some kind or suffer and injury that affects your eye area or the upper eyelid, reconstructive surgery will help restore your appearance. Your insurance may cover some of the cost depending on your situation.

And yet another reason that people may undergo eyelid surgery is out of medical necessity. Indeed, sometimes the drooping or sagging of the upper eyelid may be so severe that it impairs your vision. In such cases, eyelid surgery will remove that sagging tissue to restore the vision of a patient. Medical insurance may cover this type of eyelid surgery, though it’s important to consult with us and your insurance provider just to make sure.

After Liposuction Surgery

New Jersey Liposuction

After Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that involves the removal of fat from certain areas of the body. The removal of fat cells from the stomach, flanks, thighs, or other areas of the body can result in an improved appearance and increased confidence. However, men and women that undergo liposuction surgery should be aware of the risks associated with the procedure, the recovery process, and how they can maintain the results of the procedure. Bergen County plastic surgeon Tzvi Small reviews what happens after liposuction surgery so patients know what to expect.

Liposuction Recovery

In most cases, liposuction patients should arrange to take some time off of work and other obligations for at least a few days after surgery. It is important to rest, keep the treatment site clean, and avoid exercise for a week or two following surgery in order to achieve the best possible liposuction results.

Liposuction Risks

There are risks associated with liposuction surgery, including the possibility of:

  • Infection
  • Allergy to anesthesia
  • Blood clots
  • Fluid loss
  • Dented, lumpy, or sagging skin

Choosing a qualified plastic surgeon can reduce your chances of developing complications.

Liposuction Side Effects

The side effects associated with liposuction surgery include bleeding, swelling, bruising, and pain in the treatment area. Patients are advised to rest, ice the treatment area, and wear a compression garment in the days following surgery to reduce the occurrence of liposuction side effects.

Liposuction Results

The results of the liposuction procedure are evident the first week after surgery. However, the best results are not achieved until all bruising has faded and swelling has gone down, usually about one to two months after the procedure is performed.

Maintaining Your Figure

In order to maintain the results of the procedure, our Bergen County liposuction patients should exercise regularly and consume a healthy diet. Patients that do not adhere to a healthy lifestyle may gain the weight back.

Celebrities and Lip Augmentation

If there’s one thing that’s certain, it’s that full lips are desirable, sensual, and can make you look more appealing. It should come as no surprise, then, that so many celebrities attempt to get that sexy, pouty-lipped look. There are plenty of ways of accomplishing this, including the use of cosmetic injectables and lip implants. Our Paramus plastic surgeon has helped plenty of patients enhance their appearance through plastic surgery and non-surgical aesthetic enhancements. Right now, the team would like to discuss celebrities and lip augmentation surgery.

One of the best and brightest starlets out there is Megan Fox, and she has undergone a lip augmentation amongst other cosmetic enhancements. Acclaimed actress Kiera Knightly has also undergone lip augmentation to enhance her statuesque face. There have been plenty of rumors surrounding Nicole Kidman’s possible forays with aesthetic enhancement, including possible lip enhancements to increase her natural glamour.

Now with this in mind, there are some celebrity lip augmentations that may serve as warnings. It’s always best to use some discretion with any cosmetic treatment, whether it’s Paramus Restylane® or a cosmetic surgery of some kind, as you want the results to be somewhat subtle and natural looking.

For some time, Lisa Rinna had lips that were bumpy and rather unnatural looking due to a lip augmentation using silicone injections. Recently, however, she had a revision that has improved the appearance of her lips while maintaining the fullness. Nikki Cox is another celebrity who had a lip augmentation, though the results appear on the overdone and obvious side. The same goes for Kim Kardasian, whose lips were too puffy not too long ago. When you come to our office, we will discuss ways to make your results flattering but natural, because that’s the sure way to make a lip enhancement look its best.

If you are interested in lip augmentation and other cosmetic treatments to enhance your appearance, be sure to contact our Paramus, NJ cosmetic surgery office today.

Balancing Procedures

Most women who undergo a unilateral (one sided) mastectomy with reconstruction elect to undergo a balancing procedure on the unaffected side. This may be done at the same time as the initial reconstruction, or more typically, at a later time. The procedure on the unaffected breast is referred to as a “balancing procedure”. Women who are smaller breasted may elect at this time to undergo an augmentation, and women who have always been burdened by larger pendulous breasts frequently request a breast lift and/or a breast reduction. The goal of the balancing procedure is to make the breasts as symmetrical as possible thus allowing greater comfort in more revealing clothing. It also assists in finding clothes and bras that fit better in general. Balancing procedures are federally mandated to be authorized by your insurance carrier. Dr Tzvi Small and the staff at Bergen Plastic Surgery are available to answer all your questions regarding breast reconstruction so please feel free to give us a call at our Paramus office.

Single Stage Breast Reconstruction

We just returned from the Surgical Symposium in San Francisco with some great news! We will soon obtain the Spy Elite system which will greatly augment our ability to offer the latest technology in breast reconstruction! The Spy Elite is a laser system that performs an on-table angiography allowing Dr. Small to assess tissue perfusion. It can assist with flap design (ie DIEP and Microsurgical Flaps), help assess flap viability, and perhaps most importantly, demonstrate nipple and skin perfusion in a nipple sparing mastectomy. We are excited to be able to offer this system to our patients in the near future as it will greatly help in their care.
Dr. Small and the staff at Bergen Plastic Surgery are committed to offering the latest techniques and modalities to our patients. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us!

Three Things You Should Know about Liposuction

There are plenty of ways that you can improve the appearance of your body and your overall figure. One such surgery to consider is liposuction, which is one of the most well known plastic surgery treatments that is available today. The team at our Bergen County plastic surgery office has helped many people achieve the figure that they have always wanted. Below we’ve compiled a list of three facts that you should know about liposuction and what it involves.

Fact One: Liposuction is Not for Weight Loss

This is a common mistake people make when they think about liposuction. Liposuction is not meant to be performed in order to lose weight. In fact, extracting too much fat from the body can be dangerous. Liposuction is used for problem pockets of fat that won’t go away even if you eat healthy and exercise regularly.

Fact Two: Liposuction Can Be Performed on Any Part of the Body

Another thing about Bergen County liposuction that many people don’t realize is that it can be performed on any part of the body. Most people think that liposuction is only for the love handles and the rest of the belly area, but liposuction can also be performed on the buttocks, the upper torso, the thighs, the arms, and even parts of the face.

Fact Three: Liposuction is Used with Other Body Contouring Surgeries

A lot of the time, people think that liposuction is performed on its own. It can be, but the fact is that liposuction is also performed in combination with other body contouring surgeries as well, including tummy tucks, body lifts, and so forth. This helps ensure a comprehensive figure adjustment to make patients look fitter and trimmer.

If you would like to learn more about body contouring options and what we can do to help you sculpt your body, be sure to contact our plastic surgery practice in Paramus, NJ today.

Silicone vs. Saline Implants

There are many reasons to consider undergoing breast augmentation surgery. In a lot of cases, the decision is spurred on by concerns over breast size, breast shape, and overall figure or body contour. When you speak with Paramus plastic surgeon Tzvi Small about these matters, he’ll be able to help you make the best decision about your appearance.

There are many factors to keep in mind with breast implants, and one of the most important of these to consider is the type of filling inside of the breast implants. There are two options: saline breast implants and silicone breast implants. Let’s take a look at both right now.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are breast implants that are filled with a saline solution. These types of breast implants are quite effective at enhancing the volume and the shape of the breasts. If a saline breast implant were to rupture or leak, saline breast implants are very safe. In addition, leaks and ruptures can be detected quickly and dealt with accordingly.

Silicone Breast Implants

The other option for Paramus breast augmentation surgery is silicone breast implants. Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel. In general, silicone breast implants look and feel more natural than saline breast implants. If a silicone breast implant were to rupture or leak, it does pose more potential health hazards than saline breast implants. For this reason, it is important to remain attentive to any change in breast size or volume and to contact your surgeon right away should this occur.

Should I Choose Saline Breast Implants or Silicone Breast Implants?

The question to this is, as you can imagine, “it depends.” Silicone breast implants may be more ideal for some patients than saline breast implants and vice versa. It will really come down to the degree of breast enhancement that you desire, the placement of the breast implant, and factors regarding your skin laxity and other physiological issues.

If you would like to learn more about breast augmentation surgery and other plastic surgery options, be sure to contact our Paramus plastic surgery office for a consultation.

Just what is “Fat grafting”?

Fat grafting is the process of taking fat from one area of the body (hips, buttocks etc.) and transferring (grafting) it to another area. This is commonly in done in the later stages of breast reconstruction. As there tend to be small contour irregularities in the reconstructed breast, Dr Tzvi Small performs liposuction with fat grafting at the later stages of the reconstruction (usually when the new nipple is being fashioned).

Patients love it!

Besides from losing fat from an area that may have been stubborn to respond to diet and exercise, their reconstructed breast takes on its final shape! Call our office today to find out more about liposuction and fat grafting.
